He's a trickster god, and rather unique among the Norse pantheon as due to his mysterious parentage, he is considered to be not only a god, but a giant — although that's something of a misleading translation as it comes from comparison with giants in the Bible not for their size, but for their enmity with God. The original word, "jötunn," translates more closely to "devourer"...

Hm. "Devourer" is a bit of a mouthful...
